Vasantatilaka – A Meter that rocks

How old is Rock music? 45 years? 60 years? …. 100? 200?

I would say even more,.. now, How is that??

Vasantatilaka meter is one of the old meters or Chhanda being used in Sanskrit Literature and verses,

The famous example of this is a prayer called ‘Shakradaya Stuti’, in Chandipaatha or the prayer of goddess..

This has been metered in Vasantatilaka. If you hear this, it is a meter in which the emphasising or main beat is not the 1st 3rd 5th and 7th but the 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th one…

Striking the right chord

How to find which musical chord will fit where in the Song? Or, is there any musical chord fitting rule for selecting the right chord for any part of the melody or song?




Answer is yes. You might have seen a number of people asking the chord progressions for their favourite songs on various music related forums. And for a musician, after some experimentations it is not difficult to find out which chord fits where into the song. But again, why only that chord is fitting to that part of the song and not the other one?? Is there any rule for chord fitting??
 
Here it takes some research.. Don’t worry, I am going to keep it simple.
 
Usually the right chord is the one which includes the note played on the main beat in that part of the melody..
 
So, for people who follow Hindustani notations.. The right chord is the one which usually is represented by the note played on ‘sum‘ (as in ‘Khali’ and ‘Sum‘). 
 
So for example if you are playing  the DDLJ song Tuje dekha to yeh jana sanam..
 
For simplicity here we will consider just a part of the song.
 
The Song contains Sa; Re; Ga. (Komal); Ma; Pa;  Dha. (Komal); Ni. (Komal)
 
And following chords, 
 
1)     Cmin :Sa Ga.Pa      2) B flat Major : Ni.Re Ma   3) B flat Minor : Ni.RePa

‘Hindustani’ Music : Indian Classical or Indian Jazz??

Some people confuse Indian Classical Music by comparing it with Western Classical Music. Infact they both belong to different genres. Indian Classical music relates more to western ‘Jazz’ music as it is an improvised (spontaniously rendered) music unlike western classical music which is usually precomposed music.

One of the famous examples of Jazz fusion is Pt. Vishwamohan Bhatt and Rye Cooder’s album ‘Meeting by the River’. In this album both the slide guitar maestros improvise upon three songs and the first song starts with a faster tempo and the last one is a slower one, which sort of catches the flow of a river. This album won them the Grammy award for the best world music album.
Its a worth listening album for all the jazz and fusion music fans.

I am a hobby musician and a very big fan of A.R. Rahman’s Music.
I would like to introduce to you Mr. Rahman.
I think the people who follow indian movies certainly know that he is one of the greatest musician ever happened to bollywood music industry and also to tamil cinema.

Rahman started his career into professional music with composing music for advertisements. Also he initially was working for Illyaraja who is also a famous and versetile music director of Tamil film industry.



From his exposure to professional music Rahman has gained a very comprehensive command over instrumental music. As a symbiosis of his genius, his playing skills and modern music making technology he has transformed completely the soul of Indian film and poppular music. He has catered very mesmorizing soundtracks in films Roja, Bombay, Sathiya, Gentlemen, Meenaxi and many others. Very peculiar features of Rahman’s music are the appropriate use of Bass instruments and the variety of rhythm patterns used throughout the songs which gives a different dimension to his creations. Personally I like the following of his songs which I would also like to recommend.

Thank You! Though there can not be any comparison as they belong to different times, R. D. Burman was enjoying the same poppularity in India before him. The difference – R.D. Burman is has consistantly delivered good melodies like Is mod se jate hain (Andhi) or kuchh na Kaho (1942 a love story) while Rahman’s strength lies in instrumental music.
